Materials:

In the field:

  • Forceps.

    • To pull arachnids out of traps with.

  • Condiment Cups

    • To place the trapped arachnids into.

  • Ziploc Bags.

    • To place the Condiment Cups into

  • Collection Containers.

    • To capture specimens in the field.

  • Plastic Cups with a smooth interior for pitfall traps.

    • To have the arachnids fall into, smooth interior is needed so they cannot get out.

  • 6”x 6” Tiles.

    • To cover the traps.

  • Metal Brackets.

    • To elevate the tiles off the ground slightly for things to crawl under it.

  • Sweep Nets.

    • To catch arachnids residing in light vegetation.

  • Field Guide.

    • To identify specimens in the field.

  • Permanent Marker.

    • To mark the collections with the correct credentials.

In the lab:

  • Forceps.

    • To pull frozen specimens from their containers.

  • Isopropyl Alcohol.

    • To better preserve the specimens.

  • Glass Vials.

    • To put the specimens in for better preservation.

  • Paper Strips.

    • To label the vials that have specimens in them.

  • Ziploc Bags.

    • To place the labeled vials into.



 

Procedure:

 

  • First, we find a location to place a dry trap.

  • Then, once found, we dig a cup shaped hole in the ground.

  • We then place the cup into the hole.

  • Cover the trap with the tile.

  • Then, we leave it for a day.

  • Once we come back, we use the forceps to pull any arachnids out of the trap.

  • Then, we take it back to the lab, or wherever, and document our findings.
